Nora York comes to the BamCafe with her work in progress
Furtiva Lagrima (Secret Tear).
Composed by layering excerpts from classical and baroque music with her own standards.
Using Puccini’s Tosca as a jumping off point,
York explores the intersection of the personal and the political,
the operatic and the jazz.
The fully staged theatrical event ( someday in the future) will
take place inside an installation created by Kiki Smith,
under the direction of Joanne Akalaitis.
"You know what you're gonna get with this impressive maverick. Check that.
You always know that whatever it is you get will be breathtakingly inspired.
Here she's spinning variations on opera in her unique style."
THE VILLAGE VOICE
"We'd long suspected that the imposing jazz-pop chanteuse
Nora York might have a touch of the operatic in her soul!"
